My 15 Derpiest Travel Photos

Some of the most interesting travel-photo outtakes from my travel adventures!

I love Instagram, but I take it for what it’s worth: a glossed version of real life. The same rule can (but doesn’t always) applies to the photos we see on our favorite travel sites: only the prettiest, most flattering images make the final cut. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE looking at gorgeous photos of beaches and fellow travel gals dressed super well in the airport. I recently read an article about what a certain blogger wears on long haul and short haul flights, and this is someone who is ultra-fashionable, who offered some doable tips to mix comfort and style…. so those posts totally have a place and a useful function.

Though I love me some photo-inspo, I’m very NOT photogenic. I roll across a few fluke shots where I’ve managed to look great without having to make 6-7 attempts. I typically go for the weird choice when it comes to poses- because if I don’t look great, at least I’ll get a chuckle or two.

So without further ado, here are 15 unflattering shots of my while travelling (and living abroad) that I allow to stay on the internet (one or two have even made an appearance onto my Tinder profile lol). If you’ve ever wanted a snapshot into my true, off-the-internet personality… here ya go!

I was inspired to showcase these photos after reading several blog and Twitter comments comments from readers saying that they liked it when I keep it real. So, there ya go– those derptastic, weird photos give a pretty realistic snapshot (pun intended) into my awkwardness and real-life self. Travel is beautiful and awe-inspiring and majestic…. but it can also be messy and funny and weird!

  1. Thanks for the lovely candor of these photos! Agreed that it’s such a breath of fresh air when people are brave enough to show their true personalities and not so glamorous moments online. It definitely seems like you’d be great fun to hit the road with 🙂

  2. I love this idea! Way to often now I scroll back through my photos of trips and they’re really nice but I rarely catch the "real" moments and strive too much for the instagram worthy ones. On my last trip with my fiance I made an effort to just take stupid photos of us!

  3. I have to say this is one of the funniest blog posts I’ve read. Not because there is anything wrong with the photos, but because you seem like such a fun person who doesn’t take life seriously. I am soooo unphotogenic it’s unreal. Keep doing what you’re doing!

  4. I love this! These kind of photos always make the best memories! My favorite is the "Canada" photo with the hat and hockey stick!

  5. Hi! I posted before but it didn t come through 🙁 I was saying that I felt the same way as you! I m incapable of taking those fancy/fashionable photos of myself! Your post is so funny and make me feel better about those glamourous photos I can t do either ^^ Such a funny idea! Thank you for the fresh air 😀

  6. Love the honest pictures. It definitely makes you very relatable. I mean, who hasn’t had a bad picture…or three…or a lot…. You have been to some wonderful places!

  7. These are so great! It’s good for the world to see the "other side" of travel. While I love my travel instagram for great photos, I have my personal account for all the derpy photos. Travel is meant to be fun and enjoyed and not a never ending photo shoot. Thanks for putting yourself out there and sharing.

  8. Hilarious! This really made me smile! Travelbloggers can be a bit too airbrushed sometimes (I’m guilty here too) so I love your tongue in cheek take. Never know what to do with hands in a photo too, but actulaly I thought a lot of the photos were just fun and awesome memories!

  9. Haha I love this idea! Such adorable photographs looks like you’re having the time of your life- travel bloggers need more real people like you rather than over-edited rose-tinted experiences

  10. LOL!! These are great…so funny. You’ve put a smile on my face and made my day: ) Keep having fun and sharing it with the world!
